About Certification

The American Academy of Dental Sleep Medicine (AADSM) has recently been contacted by several members seeking clarification on certification examinations offered by the American Board of Dental Sleep Medicine (ABDSM) and other credentialing bodies.   Following is information that aims to clarify misinformation and questions you may have regarding options for board certification in dental sleep medicine.

Currently, the American Academy of Sleep Medicine (AASM) does not recognize the certification examination offered by LVI, the Academy of Clinical Sleep Disorders Disciplines or other organizations.  The examination offered by ABDSM is the only credential recognized by the AASM.  Further, no other credentialing organization has approached the AASM for endorsement of their examination.

Established in 2004, the ABDSM is an independent testing organization.  The ABDSM stands for the highest standard in dental sleep medicine.  Dentists who have achieved ABDSM certification have demonstrated to their peers and to the public that they have the skills and knowledge essential for the delivery of excellent patient care. The ABDSM believes higher standards for dental sleep medicine translates into better care for patients and greater accountability.  The ABDSM credential is widely recognized as the gold standard for excellence in dental sleep medicine.

Physicians value board certification and accreditation as a demonstration – to their peers and to the public – that they have the clinical judgment, skills and attitudes essential for the delivery of excellent patient care.  Currently, physicians recognize the ABDSM examination as the gold standard for dental sleep medicine, and we are proud of this recognition.
